The book you’ve been meaning to write, finished
Write. Proof. Publish.
You have the story. What you haven’t had is a way to make the book that doesn’t swallow a year in formatting, files, and second-guessing. Bōcere gives you a page that already looks like your printed book, a steady way through the middle, and files a printer will accept the first time. You write. It takes care of the rest.
For macOS, coming soon. Start free with one book.
Who it’s for
Made for the moment you decide to actually do it
You’ve carried it for years
A memoir, a family history, the book your clients keep asking for. Start tonight with the draft you have, or with a blank page that already looks like a book.
You’ve written it and don’t know what’s next
Bring the manuscript in. Proof it as real pages, make the cover, and leave with the files the printer and the Kindle store ask for.
You help others write theirs
Editors and publishers see every client’s book, send changes page by page, and hand back print-ready files. One app for you and every author you work with.
What changes when you write here
It feels like a book from the first page
Every part of the app exists to make finishing feel possible. Here is what that looks like day to day.
Begin without learning anything
A page that looks like print and a toolbar you already know. No code, no templates, no course to take before you can start.
Your words stay yours
Your book lives on your own Mac as plain files. Back it up, move it, write on a plane. No account can ever lock you out of your own book.
See the finished book while you write it
Press Proof Book and there it is: real pages, page numbers, running heads, a Kindle preview. The file becomes a book long before the last chapter, and that is what keeps you going.
Never wonder if the files are right
When you are done, the paperback, hardcover and Kindle files are made for you, with a list of anything the printer or Amazon would reject. No third upload, no guessing.
A cover you’re proud to hold
Lay out the front, spine and back from your book’s own details, with the bleed, safe area and barcode space already correct.
Not alone in the middle
Send the book to your editor and see their changes page by page. Colored pages show what still needs you, so the middle never turns into a wall.
See it work
The real app, thirty seconds at a time
Nothing here is mocked up. Each clip is the app doing the thing, recorded as it runs. No sound needed.
See the finished book while you write it
Proof Book turns the file into real pages, page numbers and running heads, whenever you want to look.
Not alone in the middle
Send the book to your editor. Their changes come back page by page, as suggestions, and you decide.
Never wonder if the files are right
Publish makes the paperback and Kindle files and lists anything the printer or Amazon would reject.
Human-written, on purpose
The pen stays in your hand.
Plenty of software now offers to write your book for you. This app is built the other way round. It is for people who want to write, and want readers to know they did. Out of the box the assistant writes nothing into your book. If you never want a machine near your prose, you never touch that setting. If you want a careful second reader, it is there, on a short leash, with every word it ever writes counted.
- Off by default. The assistant advises, marks and reviews, and writes nothing into your book until you yourself allow it.
- Even then, a sentence or two at most, and only when you ask. No plan you can buy in the app lets it write a draft or a chapter.
- It never changes your text by itself. Every change is a suggestion you accept or reject.
- Every word of its own that you do take is counted in a ledger kept with the book, so “this book is mine” is a number you can show, and the retailers’ AI question has an honest answer.
- The Free plan has no assistant at all, and your manuscript never trains anyone’s model.
Write with people
Every book deserves a second human
The most useful thing between a draft and a book has never been software. It is another person who has read it. We would rather you had an editor than a chatbot, and we make it easy to have one.
An editor of ours, for your book
A person who reads the whole thing, knows what it is trying to be, and tells you the truth kindly. Tell us about the book and we match you with one of our editors and quote a flat price.
Ninety days, with two people in the room
The 90-Day Book Challenge comes with two one-on-one meetings with a professional editor, and a printed copy at the end. Structure from the app; judgment from a human.
Built for passing a book between people
Send the book to your editor from inside the app. Their changes come back page by page, as suggestions, and you decide. Bring your own editor if you have one; we set them up.
Work with an editor.
Tell us about the book. We match you with a person, not a queue.
How it works
From the idea you’ve carried to the copy on your shelf
-
Start a real book, not a document
Pick a size, binding and font, or bring in the draft you have. The title, copyright and contents pages fill themselves in, and you are writing inside a book from the first minute.
-
Keep going, one day at a time
Brain dumps go in a private Journal, timelines and characters in Production Notes, and a writing challenge shares what is left over the days left, so one missed day never sinks you.
-
Edit together, without the email chains
Send the book to your editor. Their changes come back as suggestions, page by page, and you decide.
-
Hold it
Check every page in Proof Book, then make the files the printer and Amazon KDP ask for. Order a copy. Put it on the shelf.
The company behind it
Managed by people, not a platform.
H.D. Publishing is an independent publishing company in the Pacific Northwest, and it is personal by design. One person is your contact from the first draft to the printed copy and on to its readers: writing, editing, design, pre-press, printing with our partners, and marketing with our marketing partner. Write to us and a person answers. When a book needs an editor, a designer, a printer, or a bookshop, we look close to home first. The app is the same software we use for our own books.
Your book is waiting.
Bōcere for Mac ships soon. Leave your email and be the first to hold yours.
